Swat's restaurant scene has exploded over the last decade. From legendary chapli kabab joints in Mingora that have been running for 50 years, to riverside trout houses in Kalam, to fine dining at the Pearl Continental Malam Jabba, here are the spots locals and seasoned travellers actually recommend.
Mingora is the food heart of Swat. The Pashtun chapli kabab here is widely considered the best in Pakistan, and the city has more than 200 sit-down restaurants ranging from PKR 200 lunches to PKR 5,000 family feasts.
Top picks: Badwanay Chapli Kabab (3rd-generation family business near Nishat Chowk, served on naan with sliced onion, mint chutney and a wedge of lemon), Chapli Kabab Center on Saidu Road (huge open kitchen, cleanest in town), and Quetta Chinar Restaurant for hearty Pashtun lunch (mutton karahi, dum pukht, tikka).
For biryani: Mughal Biryani in the GT Road area has been the city's biryani benchmark for over a decade with thousands of Google reviews. Order the special chicken biryani with raita.

If you want something lighter, the modern café scene in Mingora is genuinely good. Cheese Please near Saidu Road is the most popular contemporary café (burgers, pizzas, pastas, milkshakes, dessert pots). Chai Republic does the best karak chai with samosas and pakoras in a cosy book-themed setting. Chaaye Khana on the GT Road is great for breakfast (parathas, omelettes, doodh patti).
For full family meals: Hotel Swat Regency restaurant and Peace Continental Hotel restaurant both run all-day buffets, dinner BBQ nights and large halls suitable for groups. Five Star Hotel restaurant is a classic mid-range pick on Saidu Road.
Bakers Inn is the city's go-to for fresh cakes, donuts and pastries — locals queue here for birthday cakes and Ramazan iftar boxes.

Kalam is famous for one thing above all: rainbow trout caught from the Swat River and grilled or fried tandoori-style with a sprinkle of red chilli, salt and lemon. Almost every restaurant on the Bahrain–Kalam road serves it, but quality varies wildly.
Best trout in Kalam: the trout farms on the Ushu and Matiltan road, where you can pick your fish straight from the running water tank. Hilton Palace Hotel restaurant in nearby Malam Jabba and Rock City Resort in Kalam itself both run reliable in-house restaurants with mountain views, full menus and Wi-Fi.
For budget eaters there are dozens of small dhabas around Kalam Bazaar serving daal, sabzi, chapli kabab and naan for PKR 250–400 per head.

Malam Jabba's standout restaurant is at the Pearl Continental hotel — easily the most upmarket dining experience in Swat. Buffet breakfast, Pakistani and continental à la carte for lunch and dinner, and a fireplace lounge for tea after skiing.
Just below the cable car, Hilton Palace Hotel & Restaurant Malam Jabba offers similar mountain-resort food at roughly half the price.

Bahrain is the natural lunch stop on the way to Kalam. Most restaurants here are built right over the river, so the sound of rushing water is your soundtrack.
De Melaes Park Hotel restaurant just outside Bahrain is a long-running favourite for families: large lawn, riverfront seating, full Pakistani menu including trout, mutton karahi and chicken handi.
Kainat Hotel Restaurant in Madyan is another reliable mid-range pick with consistent food and a clean, family-friendly setup.

Chapli kabab with naan and chutney (PKR 250–400 per kabab).
Mutton karahi for two (PKR 2,500–4,000), best in Mingora and Bahrain.
Tandoori or fried trout fish in Kalam (PKR 1,500–2,500 per kg, you pick the fish).
Chicken handi or chicken white karahi at any mid-range hotel restaurant.
Karak chai with samosas or pakoras for breakfast or evening tea.
Doodh patti and Kashmiri chai (pink tea) at any traditional dhaba.
Swati apples, peaches and walnut barfi for dessert (autumn season).
Badwanay Chapli Kabab near Nishat Chowk, Mingora is widely rated number one. Chapli Kabab Center on Saidu Road is a close second.
At the Ushu and Matiltan trout farms on the road from Kalam to Mahodand. You pick your live fish from the tank and they grill or fry it within minutes.
